WWE Backlash 2016 Preview and Predictions

Air date: September 11, 2016

We Write Wrestling – @WeWriteWrestlin

WWE Backlash 2016 Preview Panel

Ryan Davis: Founder of We Write Wrestling. This event is the last “Pay-Per-View” before he heads into college, I mean, into debt. He’s really liked SmackDown since the WWE Draft and urges Dolph Ziggler to stay away from The Miz.

Ryan Duncan: The only man who has the nerve to have the same first name and last name initial as Ryan Davis. Duncan a.k.a Rydogg has been apart of WWW for a while, primarily doing Pay-Per-View reviews for WWE.

Sean Hollenhors: If you’re a frequent visitor of this website, you know this guy. WWE Superstars and NXT reviewer and he has just started reviewing Season 3 of Lucha Underground.

Trey Lee: Longtime friend and foe of Ryan Davis. He’s applied to be a writer here, but school turned heel on him and has taken his time.

Jack Wannan: Perhaps the closest to an expert for this show than the rest, Jack reviews SmackDown (Live) each week for the website.

The Usos (Jimmy Uso and Jey Uso) vs. The Hype Bros (Zack Ryder and Mojo Rawley)

WWE SmackDown Tag Team Championship Tournament Semi-Final

Ryan Davis: This tournament has been very disappointing due to the state of the tag division on SmackDown, it’s very weak. However, my interest rose when The Usos finally turned heel. It was time and they needed it. As for the Hype Bros, Mojo has a lot of work to do, he doesn’t impress me in the slightest. I wish I could say I’m looking forward to this match, that I think it’ll be a good match, but I honestly feel like I will forget about this match once the next one starts. Prediction: The Usos

Ryan Duncan: It really bugs me that this is even a thing that’s happening. But I suppose they’ve gotta stretch the card as much as possible. I don’t care for either team, but I’m tipping the Usos. Prediction: The Usos

Sean: For the love of God I hope Hype Bros win this. Buuuuuut…I have a feeling The Usos Dark will snake a victory. Prediction: The Usos

Trey: The Usos attacked American Alpha and injured Chad Gable to take them out of the tournament. Thus, we have this redemption match. Since Slater and Rhyno are technically faces if we are going by crowd reaction, they need to face heels. The Usos essentially turned when they took AA out of action. Prediction: The Usos

Jack: I was very crossed on who would win this one, but with lots of judgement I chose The Usos. Fresh off of their heel turn last week, I can see the WWE giving them another big push after having them on the shelf for so long. The Usos as heels can be a great thing if WWE plays their cards right. Prediction: The Usos

SmackDown Women’s Championship

Alexa Bliss vs. Becky Lynch vs. Carmella vs. Naomi vs. Natalya vs. Nikki Bella

6 Pack Challenge Elimination

Ryan Davis: This has all the potential in the world to be a horrendous match. Multi-person matches are hard enough as it is, let alone include 2 women from NXT who have likely never been in a match like this. I do have confidence that Alexa can ‘get with the groove’ and make sure she doesn’t look bad during this match, but I can’t say the same for Carmella. I don’t have confidence in here, especially since she’s been a vocal point in the buildup so we’re almost guaranteed a moment where Carmella is dominating the match. I believe Becky will be the standout in this match, but Nikki will win the championship so she can go on to defend against…….Carmella. Prediction: Nikki Bella

Ryan Duncan: Becky for champ. Prediction: Becky Lynch

Sean: My heart wants Becky to win (no offense Nattie) but I think Alexa Bliss will win. I’m usually wrong about these things. Prediction: Alexa Bliss

Trey: This one is interesting. They just brought back Nikki Bella and turned her face. Alexa Bliss just debuted. Carmella is being built up as a heel now. Naomi just recently returned. Becky Lynch and Natalya are being rebuilt as the leaders of the women’s division. This could go multiple ways, but I think they may shock a few people and put the strap on Alexa Bliss. She’s a good heel and could have some good matches with multiple people. Bliss via rollup on Becky Lynch. Prediction: Alexa Bliss

Jack: My kayfabe mind wants Becky Lynch to win, but I do see Nikki Bella is the victor in this match. Nikki Bella has always been a big deal, and with her new show “Total Bellas” on the E! Network you bet that WWE will want to give her a push. But of course in a match like this it really could be anyone. Lots of potential in this division with new faces and gimmicks, so lots of answers to this question could all be great. Prediction: Nikki Bella

Intercontinental Championship

The Miz (c) (with Maryse) vs. Dolph Ziggler

Ryan Davis: Why is Dolph in this match? This guy lost 2 high profile matches back-to-back in 1 week. He lost against Ambrose for the championship at SummerSlam, then 2 days later he had an opportunity to win a match and get another championship match, and he lost. Why on earth does he deserve an Intercontinental Championship match? It doesn’t make any sense. The Miz is HOT right now since that Talking Smack promo and WWE’s solution was “This is great, let’s go ahead and put him with Dolph Ziggler.” I’ve been loving SmackDown, but this is by far my least favorite thing they’ve done. Prediction: The Miz

Ryan Duncan: Ziggler by DQ would be (at least in my opinion) the way to go here. Prediction: Dolph Ziggler

Sean: I love the Intercontinental Championship very much so it pains me to say Zigglington Von Dolphenstein will (maybe) take the title off The Miz. If it sets up Miz for a second and very purposeful run at the belt then great. Dolph with the IC belt will send it’s importance back into the dark. Prediction: Dolph Ziggler

Trey: The Miz has been the focal point of SmackDown GM Daniel Bryan’s anger here lately. He doesn’t like Miz’s soft style, which Miz took exception to. Ziggler has somehow entered himself into the picture, and now we are here. Miz has been pretty good since winning the title, and he will continue his winning ways and will continue his verbal warfare with Bryan. Prediction: The Miz

Jack: The concept of Dolph Ziggler running with the “maybe I’m a loser” gimmick for every title match got dry years ago. I would be interested to see what Ziggler could do with a title, because that would give him and The Miz new material to work off of. The Miz has said everything he can for his title reign, and it’s time to hang up the phone on his run with the belt. Prediction: Dolph Ziggler

SmackDown Tag Team Championship

Usos/Hype Bros winner vs. Heath Slater and Rhyno

SmackDown Tag Team Championship Tournament Finals

Ryan Davis: My boy Heath Slater has to win this to get a SmackDown contract, so that’s my pick. Plus, I’m actually liking he and Rhyno’s dynamic as a tag team. I dig how Heath’s in the match most of the time, sometimes he gets offense sometimes he doesn’t, and Rhyno is the monster at the end of the match that gets the win. I also think it wouldn’t be the best idea to put the titles on Usos this soon after their turn, it’d be smart to establish them a bit more as heels and then they can have the titles. Prediction: Heath Slater & Rhyno

Ryan Duncan: Gotta go with the man with the most momentum on the SmackDown Live roster… #SignHeathSlater babay! Yeah… Slater & Rhyno. Prediction: Heath Slater & Rhyno

Sean: I don’t see bright things in the Slater Gator’s future. The Samoan Dynasty will add these new belts to their coffers. Prediction: The Usos

Trey: I picked The Usos earlier in the night, so it would be The Usos vs Slater and Rhyno. I think that this Slater storyline has built up perfectly to this moment. Hey as gotten the best fan reaction of his entire career. I have a feeling Jason Jordan will cost the Usos the match, meaning Slater and Rhyno win the Tag Titles, and Heath Slater will have a contract. Prediction: Heath Slater & Rhyno

Jack: There is no doubt in my mind that the Usos will win this one. The program that Slater and Rhyno has done has been great so far, but it’s time for them to move on. Slater stays relevant by reinventing every week. If he sticks with this too long, the crowd will get sick of it. There is still lots that Slater can do, so he should move on instead of taking a big risk. Prediction: The Usos

Randy Orton vs. Bray Wyatt

Ryan Davis: Babyface Orton is great, it’s kind of refreshing, but I could not care any less about this match. Take this fool to Viperville so he can reinvent his character. Prediction: Randy Orton

Ryan Duncan: Would love to see Bray take this… His PPV record hasn’t been so hot in the time he’s been on the main roster. Sucks really. Prediction: Bray Wyatt

Sean: ZzzzzzzzzZzZZZzzzzz…but seriously I don’t care. Prediction: Randy Orton

Trey: This seems like only the beginning of this feud. It literally only started a few weeks ago and there hasn’t been much build. I feel like this will in in some sort of DQ, so I’ll give Orton the win after Wyatt snaps. Prediction: Randy Orton

Jack: It’s been a rough road over the past few months for the Wyatt Family. They got buried by The Rock in record time at Wrestlemania, they got separated at the WWE Draft, and Bray will be buried by The Viper at WWE Backlash now. Randy Orton has not had much going for him either since his return to the WWE, with his recent bout against Lesnar being ended by TKO. Orton has the success of the #OuttaNowhere trend and the RKO being slightly mainstream, and I would not be surprised if WWE would give him this win and try to run with these trends. Orton can be a huge pull for merch as a face, but he has to win matches and not become stale with the crowd. Since Bray has taken so many losses recently, and since he is not too important with the infrastructure of the company, I think that WWE would not worry about him losing another match. Randy will get this win to elevate him up the card, and maybe give him another title shot in the next few months. Prediction: Bray Wyatt

WWE World Championship

Dean Ambrose (c) vs. AJ Styles

Ryan Davis: A ton of people aren’t hyped for this, I feel very different. Ever since the split, I think Ambrose has done a very good job in his promos and establishing an actual character. Now he’s not only “Lunatic Fringe” Dean Ambrose, he’s a slightly cocky and confidant Dean Ambrose and I believe he pulls it off great. As for Styles, I am loving what they’ve been doing with him. I’ve seen several people complain that he’s not looking as strong as someone who just beat John Cena should look, but I don’t know man I love this whole “You know who I am” thing he’s doing. I think Styles pulls off his character well, I think Ambrose pulls off this character well, and I think this is going to be a good match. I know we said it for Ziggler/Ambrose, but this time it’s AJ Styles. We’re going at AT LEAST get a good match. Prediction: AJ Styles

Ryan Duncan: Gotta go with the “New Face That Runs The Place” AJ Styles here. You don’t have someone beat the biggest star your company has to offer on a stage like SummerSlam only to lose the next month on a significantly smaller stage. Prediction: AJ Styles

Sean: The time has come for AJ Styles to win his first WWE World Title. Prediction: AJ Styles

Trey: Dean Ambrose has had a decent reign as champion. AJ Styles has been on a role as of late, beating “The Place That Used To Run The Place”, John Cena at SummerSlam. I think this is a perfect time to take the title off of Ambrose and put him back as the challenger. Styles has deserved the title since he stepped foot in the company, and he will finally get it here. Prediction: AJ Styles

Jack: In a perfect world for a wrestling nerd, AJ Styles would be the world champion. But in this case I don’t see that happening. As history shows, Styles can take some losses and still be a big name on the show. He lost his first Wrestlemania match, he’s lost every title shot that he has gotten, he lost he debut WWE match at the Royal Rumble! On the other hand, Dean Ambrose has been elevated so much that him losing the belt could give the risk of him hitting rock bottom. Prediction: Dean Ambrose

Predicted Match of the Night

Ryan Davis: Dean Ambrose vs. AJ Styles

Ryan Duncan: Dean Ambrose vs. AJ Styles

Sean: Dean Ambrose vs. AJ Styles

Trey: The Miz vs. Dolph Ziggler

Jack: Dean Ambrose vs. AJ Styles
