NXT Takeover: Brooklyn II – Results and Review

We Write Wrestling – @WeWriteWrestlin

NXT Takeover: Brooklyn II has just wrapped up and oh sweet zombie Jesus, what a show! Going into this show, it was clear that it was a stacked card, we had matches like Johnny Gargano and Tommaso Ciampa taking on the NXT Tag Team Champions, The Revival for the championships. Asuka defending her NXT Women’s Champion against crowd favourite, Bayley and of course, the main event, NXT Champion Samoa Joe defending his prize against the “King of Strong Style” Shinsuke Nakamura. I could write about this for hours, but I would like to get this out before SummerSlam *pause for laughter* ok, that’s enough, let’s start the review.

Match #1: No Way Jose vs. Austin Aries

NXT’s return to Brooklyn kicks off the festivities with a fiesta with No Way Jose making his way to the ring and getting a conga line going around ringside. Aries and Jose put on one hell of a match to kick the show off, had very reasonable pacing and I found myself thoroughly enjoying it. There were a few really nice spot where Aries did a suicide dive through the middle and bottom rope. Aries ends up getting the win by making Jose submit to “Last Chancery.” This match had really nice pacing and I wasn’t surprised that it was first match.

Rating: 3.5/5

Before I get into the next match, I just want to talk about the events following Jose/Aries. You know what I mean… Aries once again put in the Last Chancery until the music of Hideo Itami hit, we saw it again… WE SAW A GTS ON WWE TV AGAIN!

Match #2: Billie Kay vs. Ember Moon

Here we go with the first of two women’s wrestling matches, we have my fellow Australian, NXT’s “Femme fatale” Billie Kay taking on the debuting Ember Moon. As the match went on, I found myself getting more and more behind both women. I think that these two have a bright future in the NXT Women’s division and if first impressions are to go by, I’d say that Ember Moon will be NXT Women’s Champ in the not too distant future. This was a very good match with both ladies looking strong and OH MY GOODNESS, EMBER MOON’S FINISHER WAS BEAUTIFUL!! Moon with the win following a spinning stunner with Ember jumping off the top rope. That was a replay moment, right there! Ember Moon once again, looking strong.

Rating: 3/5

Match #3: Bobby Roode vs. Andrade ‘Cien’ Almas

GLORIOUS! NO I WON’T GIVE IN, I WON’T GIVE IN, ‘TILL I’M VICTORIOUS! AND I WILL DEFEND, I WILL DEFEND! Sorry… When I hear Bobby Roode’s theme I just get into it *laughs awkwardly* let’s just talk about Bobby’s entrance here. The podium, the robe, the man, the music, the crowd singing his freakin’ theme! And there was that Andrade guy… He had a red hat or whatever… Anyways, Cien and Roode had a tremendous back and forth match. Also, I should note that despite me saying “and then there was that Andrade guy”, I bear no ill will towards him, I think he’s got some talent, but I just love Bobby Roode too much to root for Andrade. Bobby Roode finishes the match with a pump handle slam for the three count and the fans once again sing his entrance theme. Clearly, that’s how you get over.

Rating: 3.25/5

Match #4: NXT TAG TEAM CHAMPIONSHIPS: The Revival (c) vs. Gargano/Ciampa

We have our first championship match, as, my favourite tag team, The Revival defend their championships against my OTHER favourite tag team, Johnny Gargano and Tommaso Ciampa. This match was an absolute fucking clinic in what tag team wrestling is. Both teams played off of eachother, there were the classic spots that make tag matches great, things like the cutting off the ring., the distracted hot tag followed by the hot tag minutes later, having the illegal man on the heel team take out the face waiting for a hot tag… it had it ALL! Johnny Gargano, Tommaso Ciampa, Scott Dawson and Dash Wilder left EVERYTHING they had in the ring. The false finish towards the end of the match made my heart race because I thought it was Johnny and Tomasso’s time, but no! The Revival managed to steal the victory. I felt both a sense of heartbreak and joy. For these were my two favourite teams in NXT. I felt so many emotions in this match.

Rating: 5/5

Match #5: NXT WOMEN’S CHAMPIONSHIP: Asuka (c) vs. Bayley

GOD DAMN IT NXT! YOU’RE KILLING ME! Asuka defending her NXT Women’s Championship and undefeated streak against perennial crowd favourite, Bayley. The rematch from Dallas is here in the building that Bayley won her Women’s Championship in a year prior. This match had a big fight feel to it. That’s exactly what it was too, it was a big fight between two ladies at the top of their game. It seemed that whatever either competitor could do, the other one had a counter which made for a very exciting match with a tonne of back and forth action, Bayley got out of the Asuka lock, Asuka kicked out of the Bayley-to-belly, right up until Asuka kicked Bayley’s head off for the decisive fall. Much to the same reaction I had for the Tag Title match. Heartbreak and joy. I have to give this match a really high rating mainly for the hug between Asuka and Bayley at the end that almost brought a 21 year old, grown ass Australian man to tears of joy.

Rating: 5/5

Main Event: NXT CHAMPIONSHIP: Samoa Joe (c) vs. Shinsuke Nakamura

Okay, one last match and then it’s over… Surely it can’t be that phenomenal, right? OH COME ON! SHINSUKE HAS A VIOLINIST PLAY HIS THEME! I CAN’T DEAL WITH THIS! THIS IS AMAZING! Ok, now that I’m done marking out over Shinsuke’s entrance to the ring, which was fucking spectacular by the way, This match was really fun to watch, the hard hitting offence of both Nakamura and Samoa Joe was second to none, both men looked like they wanted to go out and destroy eachother. Nakamura and Joe used their finishing moves on eachother multiple times to no avail, I believe Nakamura crept out of the rear naked choke, as well as pushing his way out, not even a muscle buster could keep the King of Strong Style down. Three kinshasa’s later and we have a new champion! I fucking popped. For anybody that doesn’t follow me on twitter, I parodied Nakamura’s nickname for my username, I have Nakamura as my cover photo and I do on occasion send out a lot of Nakamura related tweets. Daniel Bryan asked during the first round of the CWC “is it possible to fall in love with a man from just watching him on tv?” in reference to Jack Gallagher. I’m just saying, the answer is “fucking yes!” Nah, I’m just kidding, but in all seriousness, I am a huge mark for Nakamura. So naturally I went speechless when he won the championship. This was a perfect way to end off a perfect show.

Rating: 5/5

Overall: 5/5. Good luck following that, SummerSlam!

Match of the night: 3 way tie between the last three matches.

MVP of the night: Everybody who performed on that show, who produced the matches and everybody who made it accessible to the world.

Final thoughts: This. is. WRESTLING!
