This go-home episode has been characterized as “light” by some but there are three noteworthy debuts and an exceptional trios match. Let’s get in the ring!
Hideo Itami vs. Mustafa Ali
Recently arrived from the Cruiserweight Classic, Mustafa Ali gets his bell rung by Hideo Itami. However the Samoa Joe/Nakamura match plays out, Itami likely stands next in line for a run at the NXT Championship. Ali is really great in his debut, hopefully we’ll see him utilized well. Recommended match!
Winner: Hideo Itami (via pinfall following a Running High Knee)
Carmella, Liv Morgan & Nikki Glencross vs. Alexa Bliss, Mandy Rose & Daria Berenato
Far better than recent trios action from Ring Of Honor and TNA, this match bodes well for the future of the NXT Women’s Division. Trios matches are tricky. Either they totally work or they are boring and sloppy. Thankfully everyone in this contest was completely present and put on an excellent match. All the motivations were clear and the wrestling was crisp. It is worth noting that Nikki Glencross was able to muscle Alexa Bliss out of the ring, a feat many other incoming green talent have been unable to do. Glencross will be interesting to watch develop.
Daria Berenato is also a potential killer. Should she be allowed to stretch out, she’ll be Women’s Champion sooner than later. This match is notable for the near meltdown of Corey Graves following the appearance of Mandy Rose. Her ring skills match her extremely slick gimmick. Rose could be the breakout of NXT: The New Class. Recommended match!
Winners: Carmella, Liv Morgan & Nikki Glencross (via submission following a Code of Silence)
Samoa Joe & Shinsuke Nakamura Interview
The fact that Samoa Joe called the Inoki Dojo his dojo means that this is match is going to steal SummerSlam weekend. Wrestling is the best, folks.
