WWE Monday Night Raw (July 25) – Results and Review

Hello We Write Wrestling fans! My apologies for my absence last week….I was at the Justin Bieber concert at MSG here in New York (yes I’m admitting that) and had the most incredible time. It was an amazing end to a fantastic 20th birthday week, but now its time to get back to work.

I watched Battleground earlier today after missing it last night for ANOTHER concert (as you can see I do that alot), but what an amazing show that was. If Owens/Zayn isn’t match of the year I will be absolutely disgusted.

Tonight is the first Raw of the new era and it is LIVEEEEE from the Consul Energy Center in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. It’s rumored to be a big one. Anyone who knows me knows I think Finn Balor is the absolute best, so his debut will be special.

Stephanie McMahon and Mick Foley Promo w/ the Entire Raw Roster

The announcers table on top of the stage, a new theme song….we are truly in a new era of WWE. Stephanie and Mick began the show by calling the entirety of the new Raw roster out to the stage to address them, and belittled Roman Reigns for taking the pinfall last night in the Triple Threat at Battleground, allowing Dean Ambrose to take the WWE Title to Smackdown Live.

They would announce the participants of two Fatal-Four Way matches to be held during the show, where the winners of those will go on to face each other in the main event. The winner of that match will go on to face Seth Rollins at Summerslam for the new WWE Universal title.

I’m not a fan of the name for the new title, as I would have been perfectly happy to see the World Heavyweight title make its return. However, I am a fan of the eight participants selected for the four-ways tonight. I’ll be at Takeover Brooklyn in a few weeks and I was really hoping I’d see Finn Balor there, but I guess I’ll get to go to another WWE event down the line to get that opportunity. He is a FANTASTIC edition to the main roster and will go onto great heights while he’s there.

Cesaro vs Rusev vs Kevin Owens vs Finn Balor

I was skeptical of Rusev’s placement in this match over Sami Zayn, but he was a wonderful edition. Rusev and Owens teamed up to dominate the first half of the match, making sure Finn and Cesaro were as far away from each other as possible. Rusev is at his best when he’s working with guys who can hang with him (aka not Zack Ryder) and tonight was no exception. He perfectly showcased his power, his stamina…everything.

Finn wasn’t the center of attention, almost sneaking in at the end, hitting some of his signature moves and eventually the Coup de Grace for the win. A truly incredible moment that made me jump out of my seat and jump around my living room like a 10 year old…those moments don’t come around too often anymore so I’m always really grateful when they do. Congrats Finn.

Winner: Finn Balor

Nia Jax vs Britt Baker

A quick squash match between Nia Jax and a local competitor. She is clearly WWE’s current version of Awesome Kong and it will be interesting to see her work with the current crop of female talent.

Baker botched running the ropes at one point….really?

Winner: Nia Jax

Roman Reigns vs Chris Jericho vs Sheamus vs Sami Zayn

Not nearly as exciting as the first four-way, but a fun match to watch nonetheless. I may or may not have missed the early portion of the match due to a quick power outage (New York sucks sometimes) but I don’t think I missed anything spectacular. All 3 guys tried to take out Roman early, but by the time my power came back on he was standing tall already so it clearly didn’t work.

I was hoping Roman wouldn’t be going over, but the more finishers he kicked out of the more I felt like he was going to win, and ultimately he did. Jericho went for a Spear and Roman countered into a spear of his own for the win.

Winner: Roman Reigns

New Day Tag Team Championship Celebration

New Day came out to the ring and played a video package highlighting their time as champion, before calling a fan named Sonny Boy to the ring. Mercifully, Anderson and Gallows attacked them from behind, ultimately hitting Big E (who might be concussed to be honest) with the Magic Killer. New champions at Summerslam anyone?

Neville vs Curtis Axel

Neville made his long awaited return tonight to a mediocre reaction from the crowd. Axel got some stuff in but there was no way he’d get the win over the returning high-flyer. Neville picked up the win with the Shooting Star Press…looks like he hasn’t lost a step. Hope to see him back in a worthwhile program soon

Winner: Neville

WWE Women’s Championship

Charlotte vs Sasha Banks

A match I thought should have been saved for Summerslam, but what a moment we got for Raw. With Dana Brooke ejected midway through the match after pulling one of Eddie Guerrero’s classic moves, we finally got a one-on-one match between these two amazing competitors.

They really know each other so well and countered anything and everything that the other threw at them. It wasn’t until the finish when Charlotte said “You will never beat me, ever!” that Sasha locked in the Banks Statement for the win, and what an incredible   feeling that was. Pittsburgh came unglued and it was absolute magic. Congrats to the best in the game.

Winner: Sasha Banks

Braun Stroman vs James Ellsworth (local competitor)

A ridiculous squash match that I did not need to see. What a waste.

Winner: Braun Stroman

Enzo and Cass vs Primo and Epico

Enzo and Cass had a fantastic showing with John Cena on Sunday but tonight was another quickie that ended with Cass getting the pin after a distraction from R-Truth playing Pokémon Go. Fantastic

Winners: Enzo and Cass

Roman Reigns vs Finn Balor

I wasn’t expecting the best match ever from these two considering they’d already had matches earlier in the night, but this was great nonetheless. Roman powered Finn around while the latter flew around as best he could, trying to counter Roman’s hard-hitting style. Roman went for a Spear, but Finn countered into a Slingblade, a corner dropkick and a Coup de Grace for the win and once again, I’m jumping around my living room marking out like I’m 10. But I’m fine with it though. We’re getting Balor vs Rollins as what should be the main event of Summerslam. Does life really get any better?

Winner: Finn Balor

Smackdown has got to step up its game after that. Raw hasn’t been that good in years, and what a prospect it is to think that we could be getting stuff like this weekly. Smackdown Live has an incredible roster as well so I’m not worried about them though. With Summerslam and Takeover right around the corner, I’ve been saying it a lot recently but it is a very exciting time to be a wrestling fan. What a show.
