WWE put on a great show last week on Smackdown, with debuts, title defenses and all around entertaining content. This week, Smackdown has the WWE Tag #1 Contender tournament carrying on and Sami Zayn vs Chris Jericho in the main event! Will WWE live up to the show they did last week? Let’s see!
The show kicks off with another episode of MizTV, with the special guest this time being Maryse. They praise each other like crazy, until Zack Ryder comes out and says he wants a match against The Miz. The Miz says he will fight, until he says that Zack has a match scheduled against Baron Corbin, now. At the start, during MizTV, I noticed that Maryse has pretty good micwork and her with the Miz could be a heel powerhouse. We haven’t heard too much of Maryse since she came back and I think she should be put on the mic very often.
Zack Ryder vs Baron Corbin
But transitioning to the first match of the night, Baron Corbin faces Zack Ryder to continue Corbin’s main roster debut. As you would expect, Baron Corbin gets the win in this match almost within no time. Zack Ryder never really gets any offense in this match, which was a little disapointing, if it keeps going this way for Ryder we might barely see him like he was before, but he also might leave the main roster again if he wants to work on The Hype Bros again. After the match, Dolph Ziggler comes out to save Ryder, and Corbin escapes before Ziggler gets his hands on him. I don’t know if Corbin will feud with Ziggler, but I would not have an issue with it if Corbin can be put over in the end of it. We can’t get one of the newest wrestlers on the main roster get buried that quickly.
Paige vs Emma
The first womens match of the night follows the first match of the night. Paige faces Emma one on one, as Emma is back on the main roster after Wrestlemania. This match was also very quick, but the end of the match was pretty good with a nice top rope match finish. Emma came up on top in this match. Emma cut some promo before the match where she mentioned Becky Lynch many times, but Becky Lynch did not appear in this match. This match was good, but seemed a little pointless because it wasn’t pushing any rivalries.
Enzo Amore and Colin Cassidy vs The Ascension
The tag team champions the New Day currently don’t have a 1# contender team, so they have put forward a 8 team tournament to figure out the new team to face. Round 1 of this tournament continues on Smackdown with the recent main roster call-ups Enzo Amore and Collin Cassidy faces The Ascension. This was one of the more obvious matches when it comes to who won, but Amore and Cassidy did a great job and the crowd only loves them so far. The match ended with Enzo going off of the top rope for the 3 count. The realest guys in the room move on, and The Ascension get left in the dust again.
AJ Styles vs Albeto Del Rio
Smackdown switches back to singles action with AJ Styles facing Alberto Del Rio. This match was promoted ahead of time and it was a great match. It was given much more time than any of the other matches before this, and it had lots of great spots. The match ended with AJ Styles landing a roll-up pin, and even though I hate roll-up pins, but the match ending sequence was great and the pin was excusable.
The Vaudevillians vs Fandango and Golddust
The tag team #1 contenders tournament continues on this week with the new team of The Vaudevillians facing the impromptu team of Fandango and Golddust. The Vaudevillians came out to a new theme tonight, a theme that is much worse that the theme before. The Vaudevillians move on of course, and will face The Usos next round. They end this match with their finishing move the Whirling Dervish.
Sami Zayn vs Chris Jericho
Finally, a all Canadian main event finishes off Smackdown this week, with Sami Zayn facing Chris Jericho. Near the start of the match Kevin Owens comes out to the ring to try to distract Sami, and right after that Ambrose comes out. They both eventually end up on commentary. Near the end of the match Sami Zayn gets attacked by Kevin Owens to end the match. Kevin Owens gets attacked by Ambrose and that ends the segment. It is good that the babyfaces got the happy ending, but it was disappointing we did not get a win to this really good match. This match was good, but they went the safe route with the main event by not really putting anyone over another.
In conclusion, the show was decent but did not live up to the show from last week. The match of the night for me is Alberto Del Rio vs AJ Styles, with AJ coming up on top in that match. Last week there was more unpredictability, but this week the whole midcard was sleepy. Let’s see if Smackdown can rebound from this next week! Until then, I’ll see you around.
