We Book Cesaro vs. Tyson Kidd (2016)

This edition of “We Book” is a continuation of a booking choice made by myself during Part 1 of “We Book WWE WrestleMania 32” which you can read right here. During the Team B.A.D and Blonde vs. Total Divas match discussion, I said I’d turn Natalya heel and pair her with the returning Tyson Kidd, who’s my favorite wrestler by the way, against Cesaro and it’d happen in a Best of 5 Series. ZBestInTheWorld wanted to know how I’d book that, so I’m going to tell him.

Z and Ryan go way back. He is the host of The Worked Wrestling Podcast with Trey Lee that drops new episodes pretty much whenever they feel like it(have time).

“Ryan, how would you book it?”

Z: Cesaro vs Tyson Kidd, a best of five series for the United States title  Ryan, how would you book it?

Ryan: So Cesaro is coming back around next month. He’ll return, people will go crazy, the hoopla and such. Cesaro comes back and looks motivated and stronger than ever, taking out all the competition. It results in him getting a U.S title shot at the June Pay-Per-View which I think is Payback but I’m not sure. That’s no matter, what matters is Cesaro defeats Kalisto for the title in a hard won victory(yes, Kalisto will still be champion, we cannot have Ryback as the champion… ever). The two shake hands, mutual respect, etc and then like WWE matches do, there’s a rematch clause so that match happens at Money In The Bank. Cesaro wins yadda yadda.

The next night on Raw Cesaro is backstage and here comes Tyson Kidd with Natalya by her side. The two hug, etc and Tyson says he hears Cesaro is doing an open challenge for the title tonight and says he accepts. Cesaro chuckles a bit and says he declines as Tyson’s just gotten back from injury. Later in the night, Cesaro’s out there for the challenge and out comes Tyson Kidd. The two stare at each other for a while and Cesaro shakes his head and pats Kidd on the back as he walks away. Natalya slides a chair into the ring and Kidd unloads. We have Tyson get on the mic as soon as possible after the attack, we’re not waiting for another night to get the reason, we’re doing it while the arena erupts in boos. Kidd’s very angry, not just because Cesaro has seemingly forgotten all about him, but because he now thinks Kidd isn’t good enough to face him for the title. Kidd says he’s so good he can defeat Cesaro multiple times and with confidence, he challenges Cesaro to a Best of 5 Series, the winner getting the United States Championship. He puts the mic up to Cesaro, who’s still laying on the mat, for an answer and while coughing Cesaro says “You just made a huge mistake, you’re on.” And that’s when the series begins.

Z: I love set up, especially the matches with Kalisto, with him and Cesaro, those should be really fun. So how would you book the actual series? Would you just have 5 straight up matches or give each match it’s own stipulation? Something crazy you could do: Have one match in the series be a tag match, both Cesaro and Kidd have surprise partners, Cesaro brings out Kassius Ohno (Chris Hero) and Tyson Kidd brings back DH Smith, Kings of Wrestling vs The Hart Dynasty.

Ryan: That’d be very fun and I’d be into that, but I would book it between these two and these two only.

Firstly, we’re not going the entire 5 matches. It’s too predictable and when that happens, you pretty much know who’s going to win based on what match they’re on. For Tyson Kidd, this entire series is about getting the U.S title but more importantly, proving he’s better than Cesaro. With that, he’d come out before the first match and say he’s better than Cesaro at Submissions and challenges him to make it a Submission match. Cesaro accepts and Tyson wins. No B.S with Natalya except in the middle of the match that doesn’t affect the finish. So I’d have Kidd get a tap out from Cesaro in their first match. You’ll see why I give him so much momentum so early on in a moment.

Second match, Tyson Kidd is all cocky and says he deserves to choose the match since he won the first one. Cesaro agrees as he just wants to kick Kidd’s ass. Tyson makes it a pinfall only match. Throw in a tad of comedy as WWE likes to do and Cesaro says that’s just a regular match with Kidd cutting him off and yelling “No! A regular match includes Submissions, which I’ve already beaten you at, we’re only doing pinfalls now!”

So they have the match and it’s better than their first one as they’re not focusing on locking in Submissions and getting out of submissions. Cesaro wins cleanly. A clean uppercut and Neutralizer for the win. It’s 1-1 now.

Kidd, obviously upset by this comes and says he wants to choose what Match 3 will be. Another comedy bit where Cesaro says he won the last match and he should choose which leads Kidd to freak out, resulting in Natalya demanding Cesaro let Kidd choose. Tyson chooses a 2 out of 3 falls match because he wants to beat Cesaro 2 times in one match to make up for getting pinned the last time. Tyson gets the first pin, but Cesaro is able to pick up the other two to win the match. It’s 1-2.

This time Cesaro is actually given the chance to pick the match. He says the match will be what the United States Championship should always be, a 1-on-1 standard singles match with two men seeing who’s the best. Insert babyface pop. Kidd takes control early on, but Cesaro comes back and dominates. At this point, Kidd just wants to win. He calls for Natalya to do everything she can to get Kidd the win. He comes close a few times, but Cesaro is just the better man and wins. 1-3 and Cesaro wins the tournament.

Z: Wow, that’s really good. I like the the fact that yes, it is a best of 5, but you don’t need to do all 5 matches. Sets up Cesaro as a guy who comes in, doesn’t take shit from anyone, kicks your ass, then goes on with his business, and sets up T Kidd as a heel who is willing to do whatever he needs to to put things in his favor, and do whatever he needs to win.

That’s how I’d book Cesaro vs. Tyson Kidd. How would you do it? Let me know in the comments below.

Part 2 of Z and I booking WrestleMania 32 will come out tomorrow(March 31). Thanks for reading!
