WWE NXT March 16, 2016 – Results and Review

March 16, 2016

Full Sail Arena – Winter Park, Florida

We are on the road to NXT Takeover in Dallas, Texas which takes place on April 1, 2016 and the opening video of Sami Zayn vs Soma Joe from last week is no joke. The video recaps most of the good highlights from their hour long two out of three falls match where Soma Joe walked out the victor. This of course making Soma Joe the number one contender for the NXT title against Finn Balor at NXT Takeover Dallas.

Opening up the show, Sami Zayn comes to the ring to cut a promo about his fight against Soma Joe being a war and still wanting to be NXT’s first two time NXT champion. While Sami begins to pump the crowd up by saying NXT will steal the show Wrestlemania weekend, NXT’s General Manger William Regal comes out and stands at the top of the ramp. Regal explains to Sami how much he deserves an excellent match at Takeover Dallas and his opponent will be “the best in the world”. The video screen behind Regal cuts to a static filled screen and after a few seconds the feed cuts to NXT’s newest star, Shinsuke Nakamura! Nakamura cuts a small yet quiet promo toward Sami and  we are set to have Sami Zayn vs Shinsuke Nakamura at Takeover Dallas.

The Hype Bros vs Angelo Dawkins & Kenneth Crawford

The Hype Bros, Zach Ryder and Mojo Rawley, pretty much dominated over Dawkins and Crawford the entire match. Mojo having a lot of fun in the ring by calling out the level of hype their opponents apparently do not have. After Mojo hits a huge discus punch to Crawford, Mojo sets up Crawford for the Hype-Ryder and the Hype Bros pick up the victory.

Rating **1/2

Emma vs Deonna Purrazzo

Backstage before the match, Emma and Dana Brooke remind Deonna that she had a loss against Asuka and how the “Emma-lution can’t stop, won’t stop.”

Again this is pretty much all Emma all the time in the match with Deonna getting a slight bit of actual offense in. Once Emma hits a big crossbody in the corner on Deonna, Emma takes the match home with the Dil-Emma followed up by the Emma Lock to make Deonna tap.

Rating **

Tommaso Ciampa vs Jesse Sorensen

This match felt like someone bet Ciampa he couldn’t win within five minutes. The match is fast and explosive with Ciampa getting a very strong jump Sorensen. Ciampa delivering big moves like a huge lariat that sends Sorensen hard down to the mat. After Sorensen builds some slight momentum from a good drop kick, Ciampa sets Sorensen up on the top turnbuckle with Sorensen’s head wedged on the top turn buckle. The positioning looks very awkward but not in a botched sense, instead the positioning looks uncomfortable for anyone to stay in for too long. From that position Sorensen takes a big knee to the face and falls to the mat. Ciampa puts on a bridging arm bar to make Sorensen tap out.

Nia Jax & Eva Marie vs Asuka & Bayley

Before the match begins, we see a reminder of what Nia Jax and Eva Marie did to Carmella after Carmella and Bayley’s NXT Women’s Championship match.

The match starts out with Bayley and Nia Jax squaring off with one another. Nia Jax over powers Bayley and keeps her in Nia and Eva’s corner. After Eva Marie is tagged in and Bayley regains some momentum, Bayley tags in Asuka. Asuka preforms some very familiar kicks to Eva Marie and nearly kicks Eva Marie out of her boots. When Nia Jax attempts to break up the pin attempt, she ends up giving a leg drop to Eva Marie. The match ends after Asuka kicks Eva Marie in the back of the head from the ring apron into a Bayley to Belly suplex, Bayley picks up the three count and wins the match for her and Asuka.

William Regal comes out after the match and begins to tell Bayley and Asuka how amazing they are in the ring and what they are doing for the division. He announces that Asuka is the new number one contender for Bayley’s title and the match will happen at NXT Takeover Dallas.

Austin Aries is then “interviewed” after a recap of what happened to him a few weeks ago suffering a beat down from Baron Corbin during Austin Aries’ debut on the NXT roster. Now I say interviewed in quotes because it’s just Austin Aries talking on a couch for a few minutes explaining how he is a ten year veteran and how he’s going to beat Baron Corbin at NXT Takeover Dallas.

American Alpha (Chad Gable and Jason Jordan) vs The Vaudevillians (Simon Gotch and Aiden English)

The match is for a number one contenders position to face The Revival at NXT Takeover Dallas. The Revival retaining their NXT Tag Team Championships by defeating Enzo and Cass at WWE Roadblock last Saturday.

This match begins with excellent ground wrestling from Chad Gable against Simon Gotch. After throwing Gotch into the ropes, Gable tags in Jason Jordan who begins to just toss around the Vaudevillians like they were paper. After a failed attempt at American Alpha’s finisher, Gable hits English with a rolling suplex and attempts to pin English and is broken up by Gotch. Gotch gets tossed out onto the outside and is suplexed onto the outside mat by Jordan. From there, American Alpha hit the Grand Amplitude for Gable to bridge into the pin for the three count.

Rating ***1/2

There are only two more episodes left before NXT Takeover Dallas and the card is shaping up to be an excellent card with three of the matches decided on this NXT (Asuka vs Bayley, Sami Zayn vs Shinsuke Nakamura, and American Alpha vs The Revival). Even through this episode did have some low points, the American Alpha vs The Vaudevillians was a great close to the show.
