WWE Royal Rumble 2016 Review – The Phenomenal Game

It’s one versus all! Roman Reigns defended his WWE World Heavyweight Championship in this year’s Royal Rumble match; Charlotte, with a new attitude, defended her Divas Championship against the “Lass Kicker” Becky Lynch; Alberto Del Rio defended his Meximerica(United States) Championship against Kalisto, and Dean Ambrose battleed Kevin Owens in a Last Man Standing match for the Intercontinental Championship.

Intercontinental Championship – Last Man Standing Match

Dean Ambrose (c) vs Kevin Owens

HOLY HELL! What a way to kick off the show, this match was just mayhem. Both men just beat the hell out of each other but you definitely say Owens had more control. Great table spots, great cannon ball through the barricade and some good chair action. I will say it looked like Owens was about to unleash full crazy mode which I would’ve liked to see, but Dean counters and pushes Owens through two tables for the match. Dean retains, but thankfully wasn’t booked like his MITB match with Rollins last year where he looked invincible. Great match to start the show. Rating: ****1/4

Winner: Dean Ambrose (c)

Tag Team Championship – Tag Team Match

The New Day (c) vs The Usos

Great follow up from the last match. Honestly, you couldn’t get a bad match with these two teams, the crowd most certainly favored New Day here, seeing shades of a face turn for them. The match itself was great, great wrestling, great spots such as the Big.E elbow barge through the ropes and catching Jimmy/Jey for the big ending to win the match. New Day retain as expected and it was a great match and a great follow up from so far, our MOTN. Rating: ***3/4

Winner: The New Day (c)

United States Championship Match

Alberto Del Rio (c) vs Kalisto

Another great match, again as expected. Very good contest, very physical much like the Lucha style is. Kalisto looked good besides one botch, which to give him credit, he recovered well from, didn’t hesitate, simply went for the pin as intended and moved on. Del Rio looked good, being aggressive and disrespectful trying to take the mask off, which might hint to a Mask vs Title match later down the line. Surprised Kalisto won, but not going to complain as I like him and think he’ll be a great champion, but League of Nation really on a downfall since TLC. Still, a great match with an exciting finish. Rating: ***1/2

Winner: Kalisto – New Champion

Divas Championship Match

Charlotte (c) vs Becky Lynch

Sounding like a broken record here, yet another solid match. Glad they didn’t get Ric involved too much, he’s one lucky bastard stealing that kiss from Becky. Both women looked great, Becky looking like a fighter whilst Charlotte looked cocky and aggressive at times. Both put on a great show and as much as I wanted Becky to win, it made sense for Charlotte to retain. Winning via Ric Flairs jacket which was quite comedic, but not in a goofy way. Then the post match, Sasha Banks comes out, attacking Becky and seemingly siding with Charlotte, but nope, one bank statement later, and Sasha is after the title. IT’S ABOUT DAMN TIME WWE! We should have had this months ago, but hey, better late than never. Rating: ***1/4

Winner: Charlotte (c)

World Heavyweight Championship – Royal Rumble Match

Before I crack on with this match, Dean was not f*cking buried, he pulled a super Cena out there being in the match that long whilst Owens was in the Rumble for a few minutes, please save me the buried bullsh*t. Now, this match, well done WWE, you kept a lot of us on our toes, first off, AJ Styles at #3 was very well played. Having Owens eliminate Styles was smart, and to have a revivial of Sami Zayan and Kevin Owens was great. The Wyatts looked fantastic, Brock came out at an unsuspecting number and well, #30. HHH. Holy hell, we knew it was coming, but damn I thought WWE were going to ruin it and have Roman overcome the odds. Thankfully, that didn’t happen, he didn’t even make final 2. Dean looked great, but as mentioned a bit too superman like, I mean come on, lets be honest here, people were booing Roman for coming back out but Dean got cheered, hypocrites everywhere. I had no problem with HHH winning, he wasn’t my ideal choice, but I won’t complain, like so many are already doing. WWE, well done, you avoided a hatrick of disasters at the Royal Rumble. Rating: ****

Winner: Triple H – New Champion

Overall, much better Rumble than the last two years. Every match was solid, the LMS match was great and MOTN. The rumble match was exciting as hell, not a dull moment the whole night. Very well done WWE, sometimes, they can surprise us.

Overall show rating: 8/10
