NJPW Wrestle Kingdom 10 | Preview and Predictions

On January 4, New Japan Pro Wrestling brings us Wrestle Kingdom 10, live from the Tokyo Dome. It will surely be an event you need to bring out your Tanahashi-styled air guitar for.

I am Ryan Davis, the founder of We Write Wrestling, but more importantly, I am a very new fan of New Japan. Of course I know the more popular guys and a couple of the not so popular, but most of this promotion is new to me, so I will apologize in advance if my preview isn’t as great as what a veteran viewer can give you.

New Japan Pro Wrestling

Wrestle Kingdom 10

January 4, 2016

Tokyo Dome

Tokyo, Japan

IWGP Junior Heavyweight Tag Team Championship

reDRagon(Kyle O’Reilly & Bobby Fish)(c) vs. Matt Sydal & Ricochet vs. Roppongi Vice(Trent Baretta & Rocky Romero) vs. The Young Bucks(Matt Jackson & Nick Jackson)

Let me first state that I think this match will be a lot of fun to watch. That said, I do believe this match should be a strict 2 vs. 2 match between reDRagon and Sydal/Ricochet. We saw a very similar 4-way tag at last year’s Wrestle Kingdom event and this match just seems like it’s meant to get all these guys on the show and that would normally bother me a bit, but again, this match will be very fun so I don’t have many complaints.

Prediction: Matt Sydal & Ricochet

NEVER Openweight 6-Man Tag Team Championship

Bullet Club(Bad Luck Fale/Tama Tonga/Yujiro Takahashi) vs. The Briscoes(Jay & Mark) and Turo Yano

I don’t have thoughts on Fale, Tonga, Takahashi, or Yano as I’m not familiar with them that much, but one thing I can say about this match is that I’m excited how Jay and Mark Briscoe will perform. It’ll be interesting to see how these two will do in front of a crowd in Japan. That may be the only thing that interests me in this match as I’ve never been a fan of 6-Man Tag Team Matches.

Prediction: Bullet Club

ROH World Championship

Jay Lethal(c) vs. Michel Elgin

Add Lethal to the list of guys I’m interested in seeing react to the Japan crowd. Elgin participated in the G1 Climax tournament just a few months ago and he was great. Elgin was one of the highlights of that entire tournament. New Japan has brought a second life into Big Mike so if he just brings what he’s already been bringing, he’ll be fine as he’s already pretty over in New Japan. As for Lethal, he’ll have to perform at his highest capacity in order to get these Japanese fans to get into him. 99% of the crowd that’ll be in that Dome won’t know who Lethal is so he’ll have to do a lot to make them notice him as the greatest first generation wrestler in the world.

Prediction: Jay Lethal

IWGP Junior Heavyweight Championship

Kenny Omega(c) vs. KUSHIDA

This is one of my most anticipated matches of the show. I’ve been a fan of Omega for a while and I think he is absolutely great and KUSHIDA has always stood out to me whenever I see Time Splitters compete. I have not seen what KUSHIDA can do in singles action, so that adds even more intrigue to the match.

Prediction: Kenny Omega

IWGP Tag Team Championship

Bullet Club(Doc Gallows & Karl Anderson)(c) vs. G.B.H(Togi Makabe & Tomoaki Honma

Although I’m not too familiar with Makabe or Honma, I do think that they will win this match. Gallows and Anderson have held those titles for a while and I think it’s become a stale act as them being the champions. I’m not expecting anything from this match.

Prediction: Bullet Club

IWGP Intercontinental Championship

Shinsuke Nakamura(c) vs. A.J. Styles

This match has a lot of potential. Styles is great and has taken the world by storm ever since leaving TNA and Nakamura ages, but gets better. I’ve seen a few of Nakamura’s matches, including the one with Ibushi at last year’s Wrestle Kingdom, and he’s blown me away with what he does. The man gets me invested in his matches. Screw Jeff Hardy, Shinsuke Nakamura is the true “Charismatic Enigma.” The only concern I have for this match is how Styles will hold up as he recently had some problems with a back injury. He says he feels great, but anything can happen. Even though Nakamura is great as the champion, there’s not much left to do with it.

Prediction: A.J. Styles

IWGP Heavyweight Championship

Kazuchika Okada(c) vs. Hiroshi Tanahashi

One question rises about this match: How the hell are they going to top themselves? Their match at Wrestle Kingdom last year was truly one for the ages. The only way this match won’t be a disappointment to people is if they go above and beyond what they have ever done in any of their matches in the past. In order for this match not to be looked at as a disappointment to many, they have to pull out a non-arguable match of a lifetime. But, if there’s two guys that can do just that, it’s Hiroshi Tanahashi and Kazuchika Okada. So, with all that’s at stake, this main event is pretty exciting and scary.

Prediction: Kazuchika Okada
